Northwestern University Overview Northwestern University is a private university in the United States. Founded in 1851 by a group of businessmen, Northwestern's initial charter was to provide advanced education to the population of the Northwest Territory. The original campus sat on 379 acres and had a first graduating class of four students in 1859. A century of growth and expansion ensued.

Northwestern has its main campuses in Evanston and Chicago, Illinois. Its long list of famous alumni includes Robert Conrad, Charlton Heston, Sherry Lansing and Adlai Stevenson. Like many of the larger private U.S. universities, Northwestern recently opened a satellite university in Quatar. Today, the college operates 12 colleges and offers 169 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs. Revenues from tuition and fees exceed $770 million annually.
