Program Management at United States Air Force

What do you like about working at United States Air Force?

"Good benefits in terms of vacation time and health insurance and stable employment."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you want to see how fast someone of average intelligence or less can rise to the top, this is the place for you."

What don't you like about working at United States Air Force?

"It's like the story of the emperor's new clothes. Ideas are not evaluated on their own merits, but based on who comes up with them. The ranking officer's idea always has to be the best because everyone is fearful that any disagreement will end their career. The ideas of subordinates cannot be viewed as having greater merit than those of the senior leaders, even when they are. Most senior leaders are self-serving."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would provide a more constructive atmosphere in which people are encouraged to challenge the status-quo and seek new and better ways to do things. I would reward people for finding better innovative solutions to problems and find ways to clear out the roadblocks which currently hamper out of the box thinkers."

What don't you like about working at NASA?

"Leadership is needed beyond what is currently available; decisions must be made and then enforced."

Program Management at Microsoft

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Bitter about the good people laid off and the loafs that are protected by upper management."

What do you like about working at Microsoft?

"In the beginning it was an exciting place to be involved in leading edge technologies."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Be very selective in which group you choose to join."

What don't you like about working at Microsoft?

"I don't like the deteriorating level of professionalism in project management principles as well as just plain business acumen in many organizations. There is no recognition of the value of PM fundamentals; no one I worked with could barely understand logic diagramming or principles of WBS creation. They just use MS Project to make pretty pictures that did a great job of showing how late their next project delivery would be."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Start paying attention to the fundamentals, forget the touchy-feely junk, and start with sound PM fundamentals. Use knowledgeable people to plan work before committing to a delivery, and root out the good-ole-boy protections for incompetent people who sit on the web all day doing the photography hobbies and never deliver on time."
