Shaw’s Supermarket, a subsidiary of SuperValu, is a retail company based in the United States with a concentration in the grocery industry. The company was founded by George C. Shaw in 1860. Shaw opened up a small tea shop in Portland, Maine. At the same time, Maynard Davis established a number of small grocery stores in Brockton and New Bedford, Massachusetts. Davis purchased Shaw’s store and made it into a subsidiary of Davis’ Brockton Public Market company. SuperValu, the parent company of Shaw’s generates approximately $36 billion a year in annual revenue.
The headquarters of Shaw’s Supermarket is located in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts. As of 2011, 169 stores are in operation in the New England Region. There are 10 stores in Rhode Island, 84 in Massachusetts, 18 in Connecticut, 19 in Vermont, 34 in New Hampshire, and 22 in Maine. Shaw’s sells national brand products under the name “Essential Everyday”, and is considered the equivalent to numerous brand name products.
