"I've worked at Surya for 2 years and in that time I have had no chances of any kind of advancement, constantly threatened of being fired over mundane reasons, and a battle for getting any kind of resources needed to do your job."
"Yikes! If I had it to do again, I would run fast in the opposite direction."
What do you like about working at Surya Rugs?
"Great colleagues, beautiful products. Camaraderie among some team members is good."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"Avoid this company at all costs. They will dishonestly post jobs as being located in Atlanta, when they are truly located in dilapidated warehouses in Calhoun, Ga. You will not grow here, so avoid it if you want to establish a career where collaboration, input and great ideas and hard work are truly valued."
What don't you like about working at Surya Rugs?
"Micromanaging, mean-spirited, threatened and small-minded leadership members; not allowed to do what I was hired to do. Self righteous, tyrannical attitudes of president and COO; nasty attitude of lack-luster, unfriendly Sales VP. No desire to truly improve processes which are badly needed. They all lack expertise in many areas but they don't allow the well-credentialed and experienced people they hire to do their jobs in these same areas. Collaboration is actually discouraged outright. If you are not the girlfriend of a leadership team member, you will not ever grow or be promoted because promotions are not based on true merit (in the workplace that is!). Extremely high rate of turnover. Some leadership members have verbally upbraided other directors, managers and staff unnecessarily in front of other staff. Close-minded unless suggestions come from the president only -- if it's his own idea, he'll hear it. Bullies. Dilapidated warehouse buildings for offices that reach over 90 degrees, including the poorly ventilated inventory parts of the warehouses. Large workroom in which over 40 poeple work at tables (not cubicles), elbow to elbow -- it's like a sweatshop -- you can hear everyone's phone conversations at all once and catch each other's colds... unsanitary, poorly constructed bathrooms. All of this from a company that boasts over $75 million in profits."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Get over yourselves and allow people with experts in their fields to help you elevate the company. Stop the tyranny! Don't be jealous and stop micromanaging adults seasoned in their craft. Hire and KEEP HR professionals and get legal counsel to properly handle business matters for the integrity of the business! Stop telling people that you can do whatever you want because you are a private company. Stop abusing your staff. Stop holding staff hostage with an implied threat of firing when you don't get your way. Be fair and treat your employees with dignity and respect that they deserve. Stop acting like you know everything and start showing humility. Leadership team: make decisions that can enable the people you hire to actually do the work -- stop throwing them under the bus when they can't do what you think they should do without any decisions from you. Get out of your own way, and take responsibility for your own actions and lack of decisions that stymy the business. Go and take leadership classes and learn how to manage people and processes!!!! Being a start-up (for over 8 years!!) is no excuse for continuing to run yourselves poorly."
