The Monsanto Co. Careers & Info

Current CEO: Hugh Grant

Status: Active

CEO of Monsanto since 2003, Hugh Grant recently said that by 2050, the population on earth would be equal to “three new Chinas.” He defined sustainability as “doing more with less.” Monsanto’s vision and business are centered on doing so, since the population explosion will create a crucial need for food, fuel and fiber, yet land and water are limited resources. Interestingly, Monsanto was not always in the agriculture arena but rather into chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

In 1901, the Monsanto Company was founded by John Francis Queeny in St. Louis, Missouri. Queeny produced the first artificial sweetener, saccharin, for the Coca-Cola Company, followed by butter substitute, monosodium glutamate (MSG) and partially hydrogenated vegetable shortening. Over the years, Monsanto underwent a few name changes, mergers and spinoffs with other companies while developing numerous products. Some of them have been hailed as good and lifesaving; others have been loathed and suspected of doing great harm to man, beast and food crops. Monsanto had directly or indirectly produced the following:

  • Agent Orange
  • Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)
  • The first nuclear bomb (WWII)
  • Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)
  • Phenol (antiseptic)
  • Grass fertilizer
  • Cytotec (anti-gastric ulcer drug)
  • Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin)
  • Saflex (nylon carpet fiber)
  • Simplesse (a fat substitute)
  • Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH, increases milk production in cows), and more

In 2000, Monsanto began to move away from chemicals and pharmaceuticals and into agricultural biotechnology. The company has been besieged by legal, political and public dissension over many of the products Monsanto has produced, especially Roundup, an herbicide.

Hugh Grant is leading the company toward “sustainable” agriculture with genetically modified organisms (GMO); Monsanto has patents on the genes introduced into the seeds of soy, corn, canola, sugar beets, cotton and eventually, wheat and alfalfa. He is currently pushing into overseas markets where starvation is rampant.

Monsanto careers may be tough, considering the outcry over some of the products and intentions of the company. A career can be very rewarding to the individual who has a strong belief in the company’s objectives.

People working at The Monsanto Company are expected to learn, contribute and develop their careers through a multitude of programs and education.

The Monsanto culture is non-hierarchical, entrepreneurial and team-oriented.

The Monsanto benefits consist of a total package including options for vision, medical, disability, dental, life, and other insurance plans, a 401K plan, a generous vacation schedule and much more for qualified employees.
