1.6Do NOT apply for a job with Tops Friendly Markets. They are truly anything BUT friendly to their employees. I applied as a part-time cashier, yet I'm working more than the full-time employees and getting none of the full-time benefits. I get no paid time off, I get no paid sick days, I get no insurance options, I get no retirement options, yet I work 40 hours as a PART-TIME EMPLOYEE nearly every week. The weeks that I don't get at least 40 hours, I get 39.5 or 38. What's even worse, is they will promise to train people on how to do next-level things, but they NEVER DO. I had to threaten to quit in order to force TOPS into training someone else on how to run the self-checkout area. What's worse? They're now doing the exact same thing they did to me to the guy they trained on self-check.... over scheduling one single employee to work self-check. He's about to threaten to quit, too. Honestly, the only good thing I can say about TOPS as an employer is that the people I work with are pretty great human beings. Except for management. Management is an absolute joke. They will sit on their hind ends in their office doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and then come bursting out of their office to yell at you for not standing at the front of your register lane and greeting people. Excuse me? I've been working non-stop for this store ALL. WEEK. LONG. standing on linoleum-covered concrete. That wears down on your knees, as your company acknowledged by PUTTING RUBBER MATS FOR US TO STAND ON, get this, AT THE ACTUAL REGISTER PART OF THE CASHIER LANE. Guess where that rubberized buffer ISN'T at? That's right, the front of my cashier lane... where you're trying to force me to stand for six to seven hours straight on the daily. Mind you that in New York, labor law demands at least one break be given no more than four hours after you start your shift. TOPS, you're repeatedly breaching labor laws in your home state, and you employ "managers" who don't know what work ethic is. You're a joke.
2.4I wasted a bit over a year of my life at Tops. Lots of broken promises on their end. When they found out I was looking for another job, they slashed my hours to the minimum amount required by the union. What's good is that I got the experience needed to obtain a FAR better job.
1.5I've worked for Tops for almost 2 years. I was first a cashier then I left for a few weeks after trying to balance two jobs. I came back three weeks later and apparently they didn't need any more cashiers. I took a job in the bakery instead. I loved being a cashier for the most part. I hate working in the bakery. Would NOT RECOMMEND working in the bakery. I would however recommend working as a cashier.
