Jackson State University
Overview
Jackson State University is a public university located in Jackson, Mississippi. It is considered a historically black university, as it was established before educational institutions in the United States were desegregated and admitted African-Americans. The university began in 1877 as a private church school known as the Natchez Seminary. It was founded by the American Baptist Home Mission Society to provide education for underprivileged African-Americans.
In 1882, the school moved from Natchez to Jackson and became known as the Jackson College. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, the institution was used mainly to train black teachers. It gained full university status in 1974, as it greatly expanded its academic programs and curriculum. There are now 8,687 students who attend the university.
