Overview Vanderbilt University is a private higher learning institution located in Nashville, Tennessee. The university was founded in 1873, and was named for Cornelius Vanderbilt. Cornelius Vanderbilt provided the first one million dollars for the school’s endowment. Vanderbilt University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Vanderbilt offers many undergraduate and graduate degrees, among them liberal arts and sciences, engineering, business, nursing, and human development. The university enrolls nearly 13,000 students.

Vanderbilt University is home to one of the top research libraries in the Southeast, with the oldest work dating from c. 1300. The school is also affiliated with Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The medical center is home to both the School of Medicine as well as the School of Nursing.
