Washington Univeristy is a private university located in St. Louis, Missouri. Washington University, or Wash. U, was founded in 1853 by a group of religious and political leaders in the St. Louis area. Originally, the school was called Eliot's Seminary after one of the founding members. The name was eventually changed to Washington Institute in the years leading up to the Civil War in hopes of unifying the deeply divided local community. Eventually, the name of the facility was changed to the current moniker.

Today, Washington University has students and faculty who hail from each of the 50 states of the Union. The University has a thriving international community;students from over 120 countries across the globe study at Washington University at the present time. The University offers courses in business, visual arts, engineering, law, medicine, science, and social work.
