Established in 1982 by entrepreneur Carl Patrick, Sr. and named for his two sons, the chain began with the acquisition of a few movie theaters in rural Georgia. After emerging from bankruptcy in 2002, it restructured and began acquiring theaters again. Today, it is the fourth largest chain in the U.S.

Carmike has its headquarters in Columbus, Georgia. The company currently operates the GKC, Rave and Eastwynn movie theaters, most of which are multiplexes. Carmike is the single largest exhibitor of 3-D movies today, having made a significant investment in the projection technology. In 2011, Carmike generated sales of more than $480 million from its more than 2,000 screens in 35 states.
